The Mill City Museum will host this year’s Zen Box Ramen Attack Event on Sept. 27, and Surly Brewing Co. will have a beer celebrating the event that will pair perfectly with the Japanese food on hand.
Not Your Mommy’s Umami is a saison aged with shiitake mushrooms and kombu, better known as edible kelp. Surly’s official description of the beer is below:
“Brewed for Ramen Attack 2015, this beer highlights umami flavor notes, the savory flavor and sense of depth found in ramen. The beer uses a Belgian-style saison as its base, then adds shiitake mushrooms and kombu (a form of seaweed often used in Japanese cuisine). This combination was aged together to yield a herbal, peppery base layered with umami notes.”
The event is free to attend, but you’ll need to purchase a “passport” if you don’t want to miss out on the grub and drinks.
You can find out more information on the event’s Facebook page, or read more about the beer at Surly’s website.

Our take: our writer spent some time in Japan for college, and seaweed candy, along with ramen and udon, absolutely delighted his taste buds. This is an exciting, unique flavor for a beer, and one people should be excited for.
